Summary: a museum dedicated to oshima tsumugi and the unique process of doro-oshima (mud dyeing) on the island where it is created.

Tetsuo Ishihara Museum of Traditional Japanese Hairstyles (Kyoto)

Summary: This museum displays traditional nihongami hairstyles and kanzashi.  Tetsuo Ishihara is a master hairstylist who has become a master at styling maiko and geisha hair.

AS OF DECEMBER 2015, THIS MUSEUM IS NO LONGER IN OPERATION.

 

The Costume Museum (Kyoto)

Summary: This museum displays traditional clothing and kimono from several different eras in Japan’s history.

 The Ome Kimono Museum (Ome, Tokyo)

Summary: This museum holds some of the ceremonial kimono used by the Imperial family in the past.  They also have examples of historical kimono such as samurai garb and jyuunii hitoe.

The Samurai Museum (Shinjuku, Tokyo)

Summary: This museum is dedicated to the exhibiting samurai armor.  In addition to the exhibit, they also offer dressing experiences that range from 500 yen all the way up to 48,000 yen.  Please check the website for details and to make a reservation.
